A Business Value Assessment run as interviews
A Business Value Assessment can be a 30-minute session that checks a seller's estimates with the buyer, or days of interviews with the customer's people. Run as stakeholder interviews, it can end in a business case, a roadmap and narrower test criteria for a Proof of Value.

In software sales, a Business Value Assessment (BVA) puts a value on a purchase or change that one customer is considering, and turns it into a business case. Spotlight.ai, which sells a tool for running them, tells sellers to ask for 30 minutes and to bring estimates they have filled in beforehand. On my page From Proof of Concept to Proof of Value, it is a set of stakeholder interviews over two to three days.
Those interviews become a business case tied to the customer's own goals, a roadmap and a narrower set of test criteria for the Proof of Value. Outside software sales, the same name is used for other jobs.
What the name means in the first ten results
In one run of two DuckDuckGo searches on 21 October 2026, "business value assessment" and "what is a business value assessment", the first ten results held 15 different pages. FasterCapital's page would not open and has no copy in the Internet Archive. The pages of the Aspen Institute and IFS were read in the Archive's copies of 16 November 2025 and 11 March 2026.
Of the 14 pages read from those two searches, eleven use the name itself. Nine of them give it one of four jobs, and CIO Wiki and Hyperbots define it in general terms.
The other three of the 14 pages read use a near term. Two Microsoft Learn pages speak of a value assessment, for measuring the value of apps built on Power Platform, inside what Microsoft calls its Business value toolkit. A second CIO Wiki page uses the initials BVA for Business Value Analysis.

Where interviews come in
Of the same 14 pages, from DuckDuckGo's first ten results for the two searches on 21 October 2026, two mention interviews, each as one item in a list. Shark Finesse lists stakeholder interviews as one of three data sources. CIO Wiki names interviews twice, each time as one of four methods.
Four of the 14 use the sales meaning, and one of those four, Shark Finesse, mentions interviews. None of the 14 mentions a Proof of Value or a Proof of Concept.
Interviews are a named step on pages outside the 14. Rand Group, a Microsoft partner, lists this as the first step of the Microsoft-funded Business Value Assessment it runs: "Conduct interviews with key business decision makers". Forrester's Total Economic Impact study for Salesforce rests on interviews with five customers already using the product.
The forms used in software sales
Spotlight.ai's guide tells the seller to ask the buyer for 30 minutes. The seller fills in estimates beforehand, and the two check the assumptions together during the call. The guide calls the assessment collaborative and co-created in real time, and wants the champion to co-own it. It tells the seller to calibrate the numbers live instead of emailing a spreadsheet afterwards.
The session differs from the interview form on my page in length and in how many of the customer's people take part. It also differs in who brings the first numbers and in what it hands over. The interview form takes two to three days. Between the two, ServiceNow's sessions add up to at most six hours, or seven with an optional follow-up.

| Form and publisher | Who takes part, and for how long | What it starts from | Interviews | What it produces |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Spotlight.ai's BVA session, from a seller of a tool for running BVAs | Who takes part, and for how long The seller and the buyer, for 30 minutes; the champion co-owns the result | What it starts from Estimates the seller fills in beforehand and a value hypothesis based on industry benchmarks, checked with the buyer during the call | Interviews "This is a working session, not an interview." | What it produces A business case the buyer can use internally |
| Shark Finesse, a business value engagement platform | Who takes part, and for how long No roles named; the article is about delivering it with customers, and stakeholders are interviewed; length not stated | What it starts from Internal systems, stakeholder interviews and external market research | Interviews Stakeholder interviews, one of three data sources | What it produces Return on investment and total cost of ownership, in a business case |
| IFS, under Customer Success | Who takes part, and for how long IFS, for its customer's change project; length not stated | What it starts from IFS's expertise, tools and third-party data | Interviews Not named | What it produces An analysis of potential improvements, efficiency opportunities and cost reductions |
| Rand Group, a Microsoft partner, on the Microsoft-funded Business Value Assessment | Who takes part, and for how long Rand Group facilitators and the customer's business decision makers; Microsoft co-funds it; length not stated | What it starts from Interviews with the decision makers, then baseline numbers and improvement levers | Interviews Interviews with key business decision makers on the current state, business challenges and opportunities for improvement | What it produces A business case for change as an executive readout, and a plan with agreed next steps |

| Forrester's Total Economic Impact study, commissioned by Salesforce; not called a Business Value Assessment | Who takes part, and for how long Forrester Consulting, for the vendor that commissioned it; length not stated | What it starts from Interviews with five representatives of organisations using the product | Interviews Five interviews with existing customers of the vendor | What it produces A composite organisation and a risk-adjusted financial model; readers are advised to use their own estimates |
| The interview form, on my Proof of Value page | Who takes part, and for how long The customer's stakeholders, over two to three days | What it starts from Interviews with the customer's people, who help shape it | Interviews A set of stakeholder interviews about current tools, current problems, the state the customer wants to reach, the capabilities that requires and the measures that define success; at Fuze I led assessments with 15 to 20 | What it produces A business case tied to the customer's own goals, a roadmap and a narrower set of test criteria for the Proof of Value |
The assessment as stakeholder interviews
The interview form covers five subjects, from current tools to the measures that define success. They are close to IFS's Six-Box Model, a separate item on the same IFS page. That model covers strategic initiatives and their KPIs, current and desired future state, obstacles, enablers and the financial business case.
What differs is the starting point. IFS's assessment starts from its own expertise, tools and third-party data. The interviews start from the customer's people.
The reason I give for running the assessment with the customer's people is that they help shape it, "which widens support for the investment inside the company." Nielsen Norman Group says much the same of stakeholder interviews in design projects. Interviewed stakeholders, it says, feel heard and are more willing to back the project and what it delivers.

What a Proof of Value then tests, and whose agreement it needs before it starts, is the subject of What is a Proof of Value?
Telling the forms apart
When a colleague, a vendor programme or a template says BVA, three questions place it among these forms. Whose input does it start from, how long does it take, and what does it hand over?
For the interview form, the answers are the customer's people, two to three days, and a business case, a roadmap and test criteria for the Proof of Value. Senior Sales Engineers in Value-based Sales Engineering learn to plan and run one.
